GRAN SASSO D'ITALIA
(7° Tappa Giro d'Italia )

Starting from € 1244

A week’s cycling between the Adriatic Coast and the most majestic Massif of the Apennine Chain, following the Giro d'Italia.
The Gran Sasso d'Italia, which is in the very centre of the peninsula, with its 2912 metres is the highest mountain in Italy that does not belong to the Apennine Chain.
Six days on your bicycle with enthusiasts from around the world and our professional guides and all the bike services that hotel Dory provides.
We will go on three excursions in the Romagna countryside along itineraries that we have planned for you on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and then there are three exciting legs in the mountains of the Gran Sasso d’Italia Massif with two cycling guides and a minibus to assist us at all times. The arrival of the last leg will be in the city of L’Aquila, where we will see the arrival of the seventh leg of the Giro d’Italia.

The routes and the description of the tour

S. Benedetto in P. - L'Aquila
(Gran Sasso Tour)
67 km 1482 mt
S. Benedetto in P. - Campo Imperatore
(Gran Sasso Tour)
67 km 2035 mt

We will leave from Riccione by Minibus early in the morning. After about 3 hours on the motorway and half an hour on mountain roads we will reach the town of San Benedetto in Perillis, where we will check-in to the hotel right away and have a light lunch in a typical trattoria of the area, and in the early afternoon we will leave right away for the first tour in the nearby mountains, which will last about three hours.
Then, we will have dinner in a restaurant in town.

On the second day we will climb the Massif of the Gran Sasso d'Italia until we reach the wide highland of Campo Imperatore 1800 metres above sea level. Impressive and majestic, uninhabited and bare, surrounded by mountains, and almost unsettling in its vastness, it has been the setting of many scenes of the “Spaghetti Western” films which were shot in the 60s and 70s. The climb towards Campo Imperatore despite its length is not especially hard, and it is characterised by an average 3/4 % slope. For the less fit there will also be the chance to take a short trip by minibus in order to set off from a higher point thus reducing the length and elevation gain of the trip.
Those who wish to can go back to the hotel by bike by cycling another 60 kilometres, which are almost all downhill.

On the third and last leg of the trip we will leave the mountains of the Gran Sasso and head towards the city of L'Aquila, along a mountain route with continuous slopes and descents, which is dotted by evocative old hill top towns, and which affords a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains.
When we get to L'Aquila, we will visit the village of the Giro d'Italia and watch the arrival of the professionals, so we will be able to watch the final rush and see them up close! At around 6 pm with our minibuses we will leave for Riccione, where we will arrive at around 11 pm after having had a last pizza together in Gabicce.
